CLIMATE CHANGE
Th
e SPJARA commitment (April 2021)

Picture

1. Roads, streets, traffic, cycling and walking
• Encourage the installation of fast or super-fast charging points for electric vehicles in Bath Rd Car Park

• Research and promote the various possibilities for electric vehicle charging in our area

• Apply for funds from CBC to install a first on-street bike hangar, to store up to six bicycles securely for people without other storage possibilities

• Re-open our campaign for a 20 MPH speed limit in our streets to make local cycling and walking safer, and consider putting up our own “20’s Plenty” signs

2. Heating and insulation
• Organise a lecture/discussion on home heating (insulation and energy use reduction), either at the next AGM or as a talk

• Promote high standards of insulation, sustainability and tree protection in our comments on planning applications

3. Trees and biodiversity
  • Contribute financially to the cost of planting in Pip and Jim’s new community space and advise on making the planting resilient to a changing climate. We donated one of the two new Swedish birch trees and paid for two Irish yew trees to be planted in the autumn of 2021.
  • Look for new tree planting sites (ten trees were planted during the 2020-2021 season)
  • Encourage wildlife gardening, e.g., by focusing the SPJARA 2022 open gardens event on this theme
  • Encourage biodiversity on vacant plots of land

Volunteers needed

SPJARA volunteers help to maintain 3 open spaces sites across our area and 2 planters in the Bath Road, as well as regularly watering young trees and shrubs at 6 sites. If you want to volunteer to help, please contact [email protected]. New volunteers welcome
